AR-15: An American Icon

Illustration: Blake Cale. Art direction: Anna Lefkowitz

The American Icon series consists of ten stories, each examining an angle of why the AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle looms so large in the American psyche. I led the design strategy, working with a team of designers, editors and reporters to identify and refine an aesthetic and reader-centric experience across the series. My design editor was Madison Walls.

UX/UI Design

I worked in Figma to design assets like navigation, recirculation strategies, and custom modules to communicate key facts about the series. (Shoutout to Aadit Tambe for the partnership and working magic through code.)

Interactives

I worked with the graphics team to art direct and aesthetically align a piece about the impact of a .223 caliber bullet on a body, including reporting on real autopsies from shootings.

I also designed and built a sonification module showing the output speed of AR-15 magazines, comparing the 100-round magazines to 10-round magazines.

Illustration

I art directed a series of illustrations to showcase the multifaceted approach between “love” and “fear” of the gun. I worked with illustrator Blake Cale to create two versions of the illustration, and worked with a developer to create a “flipping” effect for the article page.

I also created illustrations for two stories — one regarding AR-15 owners and one regarding magazine bans.
